The Columbia Valley Arts Council

Overview & History | How to Help | The Vision: Pynelogs Performing Arts Centre

2006 marks CV Arts’ 30th year of fostering the growth, awareness and appreciation of the arts in the Columbia Valley.

Formally registered in 1976 under the BC Societies Act, Columbia Valley Arts Council grew out of the combined efforts of local artists with representatives of the Museum, a Choir and supporters of the Kootenay Chamber Orchestra, to coordinate all such activities in the valley from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen. This allowed application for funding on per capita basis, and enhanced local fundraising with concerts, craft fairs and "the Village Arts" for example was helped at first with grant disbursement, and is now an independent arts business cooperative.

The objective from the beginning was to bring the Arts to the People, and the People to the Arts. Roger Smith Andruschuk has generously ‘audited’ ever since 1979, and Amanda Hubbard was generous with legal assistance for annual registration for many years. Until 1990 (Pynelogs Cultural Centre venue achieved) the Columbia Valley Arts Council met in Directors’ private homes or the old High School or church basements, and has always asked the questions “Why should there be an Art Council?” and “How can the council best service the community?”.

CV Arts has always been a member of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, the association of BC Arts Councils (Government of BC funding for Arts Culture) and Columbia Basin Trust through representation of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Association. The Arts Around juried annual show in the Kootenays have always been supported; many varied and innovative ways of fundraising have been activated over the past thirty plus years to allow Columbia Valley Arts Council to continue its work. Performing and visual arts have been supportive and many shows and sales have been created each year.

A consistent job of Council is to award a David Thompson Secondary School ‘art student’ each year, and over the past years, government and Columbia Basin Trust funds have been received for disbursement to local individuals and groups with documented requests for projects. Membership has varied from 29 (low) to 200+ (high) of individuals, families, non profit groups and businesses, always with approximately 70% being “artists”.

How to Help

There are many ways that you can help CV Arts, and enjoy the many benefits of membership and volunteering.

Donator or Sponsor

CV Arts operates through the dedication and efforts of many volunteers, and is entirely dependent upon grants, donations, charitable functions and the sale of local art in its gallery for revenues.

One hundred percent of all donations are given back to the operation and promotion of CV Arts programs and the Pynelogs Cultural Centre.

We continue to need your financial help to continue our programs and bring our vision to fruition.

The Mountain Mosaic Festival of Arts is our annual fundraiser, and many sponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact us for details.

Consider participating as a donor and we will recognize your gift with a tax receipt and an engraved plaque on the donor wall in Pynelogs…

Donor Categories:

  • Da Vinci $5,000+
  • Beethoven $2,000 - $4,999
  • Emily Carr $1,000 - $1,999
  • A.Y. Jackson $500 - $999
  • Pauline Johnson $250 - $499
  • Glenn Gould $100 - $249

Donations in any amount are welcomed and appreciated. Donate on-line.

BENEFITS OF A GIFT OF STOCK

Making a Gift of Stock to Columbia Valley Arts Council (CV Arts) is a triple win for you:

  • You support the programs, concerts, gallery shows, adult and children’s workshops
  • You receive a charitable donation tax receipt to offset your income
  • You pay NO Capital Gains tax on the appreciated value of the securities

Charitable Tax Receipt

Your Gift of Stock entitles you to a charitable tax receipt for the full value of your donation. CV Arts values, for tax receipting purposes, all gifts of stock on the closing price of the stock on the day the stock is received by CV Arts.

As with all charitable donations, a certain percentage of the donation becomes a non-refundable tax credit which has the effect of lowering your taxes payable. Any unused portion of your charitable tax credits can be spread out over 5 years.

No Taxes on Capital Gains

The Federal Government has eliminated capital gains taxes on shares that are donated to a registered charity such as CV Arts. Below is a simple chart to illustrate how you can save considerable taxes by donating shares directly to CV Arts.

For example, assume that an individual has stock that was originally acquired for $20 per share a number of years ago. Over time the value of those shares has now risen to $50 per share. The individual now wishes to make a more substantive donation to CV Arts than what they have in the past.

The first column shows what happens if the individual sells the shares and then donates the net after tax proceeds from the sale of the shares. The second column shows the impact that a donation of shares directly to CV Arts has with a gift of stocks.

Sell Shares & Donate Net after tax amount   Donate Shares directly to CV Arts
Number of Shares 200   200
Current Value $10,000   $10,000
Cost of Shares $4,000   $4,000
Taxable Capital Gains $3,000   $0.00
Tax on Taxable Capital Gain * $1,170   $0.00
Donation to CV Arts $8,830   $10,000
Tax Credit on Donation * $4,415   $5,000

Current Value $10,000 $10,000 Cost of Shares $4,000 $4,000 Capital Gains $6,000 $6,000 Taxable Capital Gains $3,000 $0.00 Tax on Taxable Capital Gain * $1,170 $0.00 Donation to CV Arts $8,830 $10,000 Tax Credit on Donation * $4,415 $5,000

The net benefit to the donor by making a gift of stock rather than the proceeds is a net savings on taxes of $1,170 plus an increase in tax credits of $585 for a total tax savings of $6,170 ($1,170 + $5,000) versus a net tax savings of $3,245 ($4,415 - $1,170) by selling the shares and donating the net proceeds.

CV Arts also benefits by receiving a donation of $10,000 versus $8,830.

* The above example is based on the highest marginal income tax rate in Alberta of 39% (10% AB plus 29% FED) and calculation of non refundable Donation Tax Credits based on AB of 21% and FED of 29%.

As with any financial transaction we encourage our donors to confer with their own professional tax and/or legal counsel as every personal income tax situation is different.

The Vision: Pynelogs Performing Arts Centre

Artist Rendering, the Pynelogs Performing Arts Centre

CV Arts completed the restoration of the historic Pynelogs Cultural Centre in Invermere in 2005. This community legacy now operates throughout the year, grandly serving as an art gallery, gift shop, workshop, and concert, convention, entertainment and private function venue for all to enjoy.

The Dream Continues…

…to build a Performing Arts Centre

This gathering place for the arts will be a permanent home for our new Steinway piano and provide a venue for a myriad of activities, including musical concerts, dance reviews, plays (particularly a summer music and theatre program), adult and children’s workshops and much more.

This vision now is closer to becoming a reality, and its very existence will ensure that the Windermere Valley becomes a primary centre of the arts, enhancing the lifestyle of all those who chose to live and visit this fantastic community.
